In a recent Instagram video review, Mark Zuckerberg, the chief of Meta (formerly Facebook), shared his thoughts on Apple’s new mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro. While he acknowledged the headset’s high-quality display, he believes that Meta’s own product, the Quest 3, offers better value and overall performance.

Zuckerberg pointed out several drawbacks of the Vision Pro, such as its weight and wired battery, which may lead to a subpar user experience. In comparison, the Quest 3 is lighter and completely untethered. Although the Vision Pro boasts a higher resolution display, it suffers from motion blur while in motion, whereas the Quest 3 offers a wider field of view.

The price was another significant factor highlighted by Zuckerberg. The Vision Pro starts at a whopping $3,500, nearly seven times more expensive than the Quest 3. This price point makes it inaccessible for many potential buyers, an audience that Zuckerberg hopes to sway towards Meta’s offering.

Zuckerberg also discussed the difference in controllers between the two headsets, noting that Apple’s headset lacks controllers, which may be better in certain cases. He also mentioned that Meta intends to reintroduce eye tracking in future generations of its headsets. While the Vision Pro includes eye tracking, the Quest 3 does not.

One area where Meta has an advantage is content. With years of experience in the industry, Meta has a head start when it comes to offering a wide range of content, particularly in gaming. While the Quest 3 excels in this aspect, the Vision Pro’s screen is undeniably more appealing for content consumption.

Zuckerberg made it clear that he believes the Quest 3 is not only a better value but also a superior product overall. This sentiment reflects the substantial time and effort invested in building the Quest platform. However, the question remains as to how Meta will continue to stay relevant, competitive, and innovative now that Apple has officially entered the mixed reality market.

The industry as a whole has been captivated by Apple’s new “spatial computer.” Prominent figures such as Sam Altman from OpenAI, Elon Musk, and Carl Pei from Nothing have expressed their positive views on the Vision Pro. With the growing interest in mixed reality, it will be interesting to see how Meta evolves the Quest to stay ahead in the competition.
