Rwandan President Paul Kagame has made his first-ever announcement that he intends to seek a fourth term in the upcoming elections scheduled for next year.

In an interview with the French-language magazine Jeune Afrique, President Kagame expressed his gratitude for the confidence Rwandans have placed in him and confirmed his candidacy, saying, “I am happy with the confidence Rwandans have shown in me. I will always serve them as long as I can. Yes, I am indeed a candidate.”

This decision follows the Rwandan government’s move in March to align the legislative and presidential election dates, both set to occur in August 2024. Prior to this announcement, Kagame had not openly declared his intentions, but he had overseen constitutional changes that allowed him to serve a third term and potentially extend his rule until 2034.

Kagame, a former rebel leader, has been the de facto leader of Rwanda since the end of the 1994 genocide. He has secured re-election with over 90% of the vote in the 2003, 2010, and 2017 elections.
