Guardiola, first football manager to spend €2b on transfer fees

Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has become the first football coach to exceed €2 billion in spending on transfer fees, according to Transfermarkt website. Following an active summer transfer window in which his Premier League club invested a substantial €241 million in new players, the former head coach of Barcelona and Bayern Munich has now reached a career total of €2.04 billion in transfer expenditures.
Throughout his 16-year managerial career, Guardiola has overseen the signings of 78 players at three different clubs. Excluding free transfers, this averages out to approximately €26.1 million per transfer. This is primarily because Guardiola has exclusively managed some of Europe’s wealthiest clubs with significant financial resources. However, the majority of this spending has occurred during his tenure in England. Of the top 20 signings managed by Guardiola, only two were made during his stints at other clubs: David Villa (signed for €40 million from Valencia) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (signed for €69.5 million from Inter).
José Mourinho, now managing Serie A side Roma, is in 2nd place. Mourinho has been more conservative in the transfer market in recent seasons but still holds second place with a career spending total of €1.86 billion. Carlo Ancelotti (€1.69 billion), Massimiliano Allegri (€1.4 billion), and Diego Simeone (€1.21 billion) complete the top five. Manuel Pellegrini, Thomas Tuchel, Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino and Jürgen Klopp feature in the top 10.
