The leader of the left-leaning Egyptian Social Democratic Party, Farid Zahran, may not be contesting in the party’s next internal elections.

According to the 67-year-old, he will step back in the party’s upcoming elections scheduled for May 2024 after winning the chairmanship race twice, in 2016 and 2022.

“We have internal elections in the party coming up in a few months to select a new chairman and I am not planning to run,” he told GSW.

The two-time chairman also expressed his availability to support the incoming leadership of the party with his capabilities if they choose to seek his assistance.

“Once we are done, my political future will depend on the new leadership and how far it wants to make use of my capabilities. Whether as a consultant, a board member, a friend, or even a supporter. It will also depend on my desire to give time to political action as I used to or if I will turn more to cultural action,” Zahran added.

He also noted that the Egyptian Social Democratic Party is working on strategically building and positioning itself as a strong alternative to the current administration under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

“The Egyptian Social Democratic Party is keen to build a strong opposition that can pose a viable and strong alternative to the current regime,” Zahran said.

Farid Zahran was named chairman of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party for the first time in April 2016 after the resignation of its founder Mohamed Abdul-Ghar in February that year.

He was re-elected in 2022 after internal elections held at the General Federation of Egyptian Trade Unions (GFETU) on May 6.

Zahran emerged winner with 529 votes, beating his runner-up Hanna Greece who polled 229 votes.
