Top 3 European Films that Made Our 2023 Memorable

trophies and awards

It’s a new year but we can’t completely sign out without acknowledging the heroes who pushed European films to the highest Global point in 2023. Remember, a European film grabbed the  Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Thus, this article will focus on three top European movies that made 2023 a whole mood without ranking!

Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet (France)

To begin with, “Anatomy of a Fall” by French film director, Justine Triet is arguably the number one movie that reigned on the lips of many Europeans for the longest part of 2023. This court trial-themed movie shines a light on a famous writer who has to prove her innocence in her husband’s death. With the only eyewitness being the couple’s blind son, what will unfold?

The suspenseful “Anatomy of a Fall” won the 2023 Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the Best European Movie at the European Film Awards as well as a chance to compete for the Oscars in 2024.

Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan (USA and UK)

Oppenheimer is also another exceptional blockbuster movie to spare your time for. Christopher Nolan took the opportunity and time to direct the life of American scientist  J. Robert Oppenheimer who contributed to the creation of the atomic bomb. It shined bright at the box office for a long time after its release in July 2023. It stars Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Josh Hartnett, and Jack Quaid among others. Oppenheimer also received several accolades in 2023. It is fighting head-on with “Barbie” on the Global Globe’s nomination list for the best film of 2023 as they both boast eight and nine nominations respectively.

Fallen Leaves by Aki Kaurismaki (Finland and Germany)

Aki Kaurismaki’s “Fallen Leaves” is a movie that erupts a swell of emotions among the audience and viewers. The protagonists, Ansa who is a supermarket worker, and Holappa, a drunkard, against all odds try to build a meaningful relationship. The most glaring thing to pick out from “Fallen Leaves” is how lonely people with baggage need love too.

It is a continuation of Aki’s  “Proletariat series which was supposed to be a trilogy. It was selected by the National Board of Review as one of the top five movies in 2023 after it was released in Finland on September 15, 2023. It stars some of the best European actors like Alma Pöysti as Ansa, Jussi Vatanen as Holappa, Janne Hyytiäinen as Huotari, and Nuppu Koivu as Liisa.

And it’s a wrap for 2023. There are, however, new movies to look out for in 2024. ‘True Detective: Night Country’, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, and ‘Bridgerton’ are some of the series that will grace your screens in 2024. Buckle up and enjoy as I take my time and pay attention to bring you the next set of 2024 best films. Enjoy the new year with all the best wishes!
