Discussions are underway in the Belgian city of Charleroi to build a stadium influenced by Qatar’s renowned Stadium 974, as reported by the newspaper La Derniere Heure.
The 1895 Arena is set to be constructed following the cancellation of a previous Legoland project, the publication mentioned.
Made up of repurposed decommissioned containers from the Belgian ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge, the 1895 Arena will utilise precisely 1895 containers, mirroring the inventive concept of Qatar’s Stadium 974.
“After the setbacks experienced with large foreign industrial groups, it appears that there is now a genuine consensus for both the private and public sectors in Belgium to collaborate and achieve what others have delayed in concluding. A truly grand and unifying Belgian project at last,” a source close to the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) informed La Derniere Heure.
Recognised as a significant triumph in innovation and sustainability, the Stadium 974 aimed to inspire the development of similar venues, like the 1895 Arena, promoting waterfront growth in the sports and entertainment sectors.
Constructed with 974 shipping containers, Qatar’s iconic stadium is scheduled for dismantling after hosting matches during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 late last year.
Leaving a lasting legacy, the stadium held its final match in the quarterfinals and was followed by the renowned Fashion United by CR Runway event, which brought together 150 designers from six continents and 50 countries.
H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, the Secretary General of the World Cup’s organising body, stated that every stadium adhered to sustainability standards to ensure their continued use after the tournament, reflecting Qatar’s commitment to cost-effective sustainability.
Not only is the Stadium 974 anticipated to be taken apart, but several of the 2022 World Cup’s venues will also reduce their post-tournament capacity from 40,000 to 20,000.
The removed seating will be provided to underdeveloped countries to repurpose the material for other needs.
