Djokovic makes Grand Slam history at Roland Garros
In a remarkable feat, Novak Djokovic clinched the 2023 French Open championship with a resounding victory over Casper Ruud, triumphing with a score of 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, 6-5 in the final. With this momentous win, Djokovic has etched his name in Grand Slam history, surpassing Rafael Nadal's previous record and securing an impressive total of 23 major titles.
Ruud started out strong establishing a 3-0 advantage in the opening set, but Djokovic displayed his resilience and fought back, pushing his opponent to a tiebreak. In his signature fashion, Djokovic emerged victorious in the tiebreak, maintaining his flawless record of zero unforced errors in tiebreaks throughout the tournament. The intense first set lasted an hour and 21 minutes.
Buoyed by his success in the tiebreak, Djokovic carried the momentum into the second set. Although Ruud put up a more promising performance in the third set, keeping the scoreline tight, it was evident that the Serbian star was determined to etch his name in the annals of history.
Even seven-time Super Bowl champion, Tom Brady, a was captivated by the moment and captured it on his phone. As the match reached its climax, a crosscourt forehand from Ruud sailed wide, cementing Djokovic’s victory and solidifying his place as the official winner.
Ever since Djokovic surpassed the record for the highest number of weeks at No. 1, he has consistently emphasized that his utmost drive stems from the grand slam tournaments.
After grappling with challenges both physical and material in the past – his favourite terrain not being clay and surviving various injuries – Djokovic demonstrated remarkable intensity and motivation throughout the Paris Grand Slam.
As he embarks on the quest to conquer the remaining two grand slam tournaments of the year, the reigning world No. 1 is determined to keep winning despite already surpassing Nadal and Federer and having nothing left to prove.
