As we’ve just celebrated International Women’s Day, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens prepared an exhilarating series of exhibitions featuring women artists and those who identify as female throughout 2024.

Titled ‘What If Women Ruled the World?’, the museum will be entirely transformed by the works of these talented individuals, presenting solo exhibitions, special projects, and grand-scale installations. This initiative takes inspiration from a similar piece by Yael Bartana, now adorning the museum’s façades in Greek and English.

Commencing on 9th March, the next instalment of ‘What If Women Ruled the World?’ will showcase solo exhibitions by Lola Flash, Bouchra Khalili, Tala Madani, and Malvina Panagiotidi, alongside special projects by Yael Bartana, Claudia Comte, and Hadassah Emmerich.

Yael Bartana’s artistic practice revolves around video and moving images, often delving into historical events and collective identities. Her installations critique political speeches and activism with a humorous and anti-war narrative. Lola Flash’s work challenges stereotypes and confronts biases, celebrating wisdom and power often disregarded due to ageism.

Swiss artist Claudia Comte’s 30-metre wall painting presents a stunning ripple effect, symbolising the vibrancy and interconnectedness of the natural world, while Hadassah Emmerich’s vibrant paintings and murals invite viewers to engage with themes of attraction and intimacy.

Malvina Panagiotidi’s exhibition delves into the themes of genius, isolation, and symbols from a magical manuscript, recontextualised as carriers of memory.

This exhibition promises to be a celebration of female artistic strength, exploring a wide spectrum of themes and perspectives. With its diverse range of artists and projects, ‘What If Women Ruled the World?’ offers a unique and inspiring experience that you absolutely won’t want to miss.
