Ghanaian Afua Owusu Asantewaa Aduonum has surpassed the Guinness World Record for the longest individual singing marathon. The broadcast journalist and mother of three commenced her continuous performance of numerous Ghanaian songs from midnight on Sunday, December 24, 2024.
Afua concluded the marathon on Friday, December 29, 2023, at midnight, accumulating 126 hours and 52 minutes of continuous singing. She exceeded the previous record held by Sunil Waghmare, an Indian, who sang for 105 hours in March 2012.
Asantewaa started her music marathon called “afuaasantewaasingathon”. For five days and a few hours, she moved through different positions such as standing, lying down, sitting and squatting, without ever stopping singing.
The enthusiasm was palpable at the Akwaaba Village in Accra, where fans and dignitaries from diverse backgrounds supported her marathon, her perseverance and exceptional talent.
Unlike Sunil Waghmare, who is a professional singer, Afua is not a professional musician. But music is her passion, as reported by local media, and it was her dedication and perseverance that allowed the amateur to make music history.
This record established by Afua Asantewaa Aduonum is a source of pride for Ghana and aroused the admiration of many compatriots. Social networks took over the event with numerous messages of support and encouragement.
